Personality traits and uncertainty as a predictor for eating disorders

Isis Elzakkers

In 1999 I graduated cum laude from medical school at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After working as a senior house officer in Medicine I worked in the field of Psychiatry from 2001 onwards. In 2007 I finished my training in psychiatry after working in numerous fields, e.g. psychotherapeutic settings, closed and open wards, child & adolescent psychiatry and consultation and liaison psychiatry. During my training as a psychiatric resident I became interested in mental competency and the rationale and effect of coerced treatment.

In 2009 I started working at Rintveld, Centre for Eating Disorders in Zeist, The Netherlands. My main focus is working with patients with severe and enduring eating disorders. Together with my team I am developing a program for this very ill patient group. Issues around mental competency, end of life decisions, limits to our medical care and the usefulness of coerced treatment are prevalent in working with this group.

Next to developing a clinically relevant way of dealing with these issues, I am conducting research regarding these topics. I have done literature reviews (which have yet to be published) and I am currently conducting a study on mental competency in patients with anorexia nervosa. Also I am collecting data to have more epidemiological knowledge on the prevalence of coerced treatment in The Netherlands.
